About Should I still travel to St.Petersburg after the recent oil spill

Should I still travel to St.Petersburg after the recent oil spill?

Health & Safety - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
I would recommend that you do not go because there are still some safety and health hazards due to the current oil spill. I guess it is your choice though but just to let you know, there are a lot of bad things that can occur due to the oil spill. Check this link out for more details. http://www.waterencyclopedia.com/Oc-Po/Oil-Spills-Impact-on-the-Ocean.html
Answer 2 :
St. Petersburg is about 500 miles away from the area of the spill. Go ahead and travel. It is very unlikely that the spilled oil will ever get there

Answer 1 :
Why are you special?..you can go to Lebanon if you like as far as i care!
Answer 2 :
Yes, especially Turkey, they are very moderate & welcoming to foreigners no matter what their beliefs. Good luck & enjoy!
Answer 3 :
I Think you won't have problem in Russia , but i wouldn't go to Egypt or Turkey . it's an ugly world we leave in .
Answer 4 :
I'm pretty sure it's safe to travel to those places. My jewish side of the family is from Russia and I know there's a lot of jewish people there. For Turkey and Egypt, even though the predominant religions aren't Jewish, the people there are pretty tolerant. I'd be weary of going to the south or border of Turkey though. It's pretty close to the Middle East with Iran/Iraq/Palestine and we all know how much they love Jews over there.
Answer 5 :
are you wearing a sign around your neck say i am a jew
Answer 6 :
Perfectly safe, shouldn't have any more problems than you would have at home.
Answer 7 :
I think its very much safe. They would not ask your religion in the airport anyway.

Why does Yahoo Travel Destinations Spot allow pictures of Alaska or Yosemite in a series on St. Petersburg?
Doesn't anyone edit the pictures that are featured for a given detination? It's silly to have pictures of other places stuck in the middle of a series on a particular place.

I agree with you!! My guess is that the pictures were put in by someone who had no idea of what they were doing and just wanted to get the task assigned to them done

About Moscow & St Petersburg for 8 nights: Independent travel vs Group tour

Moscow & St Petersburg for 8 nights: Independent travel vs Group tour?
Hi. Two well-travelled Americans (who have never been to Russia) are going to travel to Moscow/St.Petersburg for 8 nights. They don't like group tours at all and would like to travel independently. Would you travel to those cities for the first time without a guide or a group? On a scale of 1 to 10, how difficult would it be to do sightseeing in these cities without a guide or a group? For your information, they are thinking of purchasing plane tickets, booking hotels, getting a train ticket from Moscow to St. Petersburg, doing sightseeing, and learning Russian alphabets by themselves. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks! Definition: 1 (easiest) and 10 (most difficult) ...

Answer 1 :
Indedepent works every time for me. An 8 on your scale I would say.
Answer 2 :
I have visited Russia a few times. I never used a group tour. If you learn the letters, a few basic words and phrases it would be easy 1. If you have used the New York city subway and know the Russian letters, the metro is easy. You need to assume most people do not know English. I recommend you learn or bring a sheet of paper with the script form of Russian. I got into a problem without it. I found myself with a menu in script and no one who knew English. I did not know what the foods were. I would recommend a few books. The DK Eyewitness Travel Moscow and also the one for St. Petersburg. If you choice different guidebooks, make sure the maps use Cyrillic for street names. If it uses only Latin letters, you will have great troubles finding your way around. I recommend the Barron's phrase book, "Now you're talking Russian in no Time". I like that it has things like the customs forms in both Russian and English. There is also a cd for learning some of phrases in the book, if you want. If you buy Rapid Russian cd, you can learn some basic survival words for travel. It also has a booklet with the words in it to use as a help on the trip. Rapid Russian cd is about 200 words and phrases. They are words needed for a visit. http://www.earwormslearning.com/pdf/Booklet_Russian.pdf If you do not learn the Cyrillic letters, you have a 10. It would be a very difficult visit. With only the letters and a phrasebook, about 5. I enjoy my time in Russia. I know about 400 words.
Answer 3 :
Hi! I guess it would be 8 if you don't learn some russian words. The point is that many people here don't speak english unfortunately. My advice though is to ask young people, we speak english))))) As to booking train tickets try this web site www.rzd.ru. Hope it can help you

About travel to Moscow and St-Petersburg: Is it THAT complicated and restrictive

travel to Moscow and St-Petersburg: Is it THAT complicated and restrictive?
Byuing a plane ticket is no problem. Then the Visa. Ok, Then the letter of invitation (possibly get one via the web). Then what. Ok, I make hotel reservation in Moscow for one night (in order to register properly). So what happens? Do they just sign the documents (surely I must have made a "reading" mistake when I read that they keep your passport for like 3 days?) Answers from experiences travelers appreciated.
Russia - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Not very likely that they will keep your passport for more than a couple of hours whilst the hotel registers your visa. Do carry your travel documents with you when you are out and about , especially in tourist areas where there are schoolchildren etc.such as Alexandria Park in Moscow. As for it being restrictive? Well no its not restrictive, and just like airport security is there to keep people safe
Answer 2 :
First, make sure you have a copy of your passport before giving it to anyone, though I would not recommend relinquishing it to anyone. Also, unless you are planning to stay (beyond 'x' number of days, semi-permanently) you should not need a letter of invitation just to visit. I do not know where you are from, though unless you are seeking employment, I have never heard of that requirement. I would contact a travel agency in your area and ask them for advice. With that said, you can take an overnight (sleeper) train from Moscow to St. Petersburg (and vise versa). I believe it leaves around 9 or 10 pm and you arrive around 9 am. Keep in mind that each sleeper section if-you-will sleeps four people (two sets of bunk beds with a small table in between) and unless you reserve the whole thing, you need to be comfortable sleeping in the same "room" as strangers. However, I have done this twice, once sharing a "room" with two strangers and never had a problem. The transportation is very reliable

How much would it cost to travel to St. Petersburg Russia?
Not planning a trip anytime soon, just super curious. And if it helps, I live in TX

Answer 1 :
My girlfriend and husband visited St. Petersburg last year with an american tour company (TUC) they also visited Helsinki and Moskau. The trip was first class, 5* hotels etc. - cost very expensive. It was their best ever.
Answer 2 :
Depending on the season, your roundtrip fare will be anywhere from $700 to $2000. As for accommodations, it also depends where you stay, etc. Costs are comparable to the costs in the U.K.
Answer 3 :
Roughly: Airfare about $1800usd from U.S. $900usd from Europe Rooms w/breakfast $200usd a night Excursions/Museums. $50usd per day per person Food, $60usd per day per person Nightlife, $100usd per day per person Taxis $10 per one way trip This is about right for a comfortable trip, if you prefer spending more it will be more than welcome

About st. petersburg travel

st. petersburg travel?
i'm travelling to st. petersburg russia in december with my friend. For people who have been there, what hostel or cheap hotel would you recommend? We want good location (preferably near nightlife and/or places of interest), a safe hostel/hotel, and reasonably priced (although we would rather pay more money for a nicely located hostel, rather than less money for bad location). Any help would be appreciated, especially from girls and young people who have been there (we're both 21) also, how difficult is it to get by without a guide? I'm somewhat worried that few people there speak english, but we're both poor college students and a guide is probably too expensive for us

Answer 1 :
it'z like anyother mountain
Answer 2 :
It could be difficult. St. Petersburg is not cheap place. You would not be able to find cheap hostel(or hotel) in nice, save area. It does not work this way. Search Internet travel sections to see what different people suggesting. Get some names, locations and send me private email. I have a cousine, she lives in St.Petersburg. She may be will be able to help or point to right direction.
Answer 3 :
You really should have entered how much you want to spend a night. For some people $40 is cheap, others $100 a night is cheap and so on. I know an excellent place with prime location for about $100 a night.
Answer 4 :
I've stayed at Nord Hostel a few times. Its about as central as you can get and only a couple of years old. You will be able to get around without a guide. Don't expect very many people to be able to speak English. In Your Pocket have an excellent guide book on St Petersburg which is updated regularly.
Answer 5 :
search here for cheap hotel http://globetravels.totalh.com see google maps for exact location for the hotel

About elsinki to St Petersburg travel info

elsinki to St Petersburg travel info?
I mite be going to Helsinki Finland in May/June, does any one know about train, ferry, or plane travel between the two, how much a ticket is and how long it'll take?
Russia - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Finnair flies to St. Petersburg from Helsinki, as does Aeroflot. The plane ride is just under an hour. Now, just bear in mind that if you are a US/EU citizen, you need to get a Russian visa months in advance.
Answer 2 :
'Allegro' speed train makes it in 3.5 hours between Helsinki and St.Pete. Tickets EUR 134 for the 1st class, EUR 84 for the 2nd class (one-way!). http://eng.rzd.ru/isvp/public/rzdeng?STRUCTURE_ID=4144 Direct airflights (return ticket): Rossiya EUR 110-140, Finnair EUR 170 The flight is below 1 hour You will need a pre-arranged Russian visa to enter.
Answer 3 :
Travel between Helsinki and St.Petersburg is subject to different requirements than Russia in general. Currently if you travel by a ferry or train, you can spend 72 hours in St.Petersburg WITHOUT A VISA. This can save you much time and $200. Some details of this program are in flux, so check with the Russian consulate in Helsinki shortly before buying a ticket

About What is the best way to travel from St.Petersburg to Helsinki

What is the best way to travel from St.Petersburg to Helsinki?
I am going to St. Petersburg in September and got a dual-entry visa with the hope of visiting Helsinki. The only problem is I am not sure of the best way to get there. I am trying to save time and, for that reason, the only two options are train and plane. Does anyone have suggestions and, if so, what is the cheapest way to go? Any suggestions for nice accomodations (not expensive, but not sketchy) in Helsinki? Thanks!
Russia - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
The easiest and cheapest way to get to Helsinki from St.P is by bus. It doesn't take that long. If you go on a regular week day there will be no traffic at the border and it will take 5-6 hours max. For staying in Helsinki I recommend President Hotel. It's a 3-star hotel located in the very city centre. It's clean and nice. The staff is very helpful.
Answer 2 :
Finnair has 3 flights daily between the two cities. Flight times are less than 1 hour, and cost as little as 49 Euros each way. When I went in October the flight had only a fraction of its capacity, so passport control, baggage claim, and customs was quick and easy. It was especially easy going into Pulkovo Dva; I was on the street 15 minutes after walking off the plane
