About Cheap places to stay in St Petersburg Russia

Cheap places to stay in St Petersburg Russia?
Hello, I plan to travel to St Petersburg and I am on a very tight budget and I cannot afford a hotel. My plan was to stay with two friends that are girls that I know in St Petersburg but that plan fell thru.. :( Does anyone know of any VERY cheap hostels in the city? Or would anyone (preferably female) be willing to share their home with me for 10 days? I promise I won't take up much space and I won't even be in the house very often. I am traveling to Russia to meet my biological grandmother, mother and sister, but they have no room for me to stay with them. Thanks

There are plenty of hostels in Petersburg. I've been there twice but I can't remember exactly where I stayed. I just turn up with my guide book and find one that sounds OK. Or you can research it on the internet before you go. Don't forget it might be busier in June because of the white nights but I went there for white nights in 2006 and didn't have a problem finding a hostel

Anyone else ever traveled to St. Petersburg? What were your favorite sights?
I went there in August '05. I found this awesome apartment in the Admiralty complex, a short walk from the Hermitage. It was a great trip.

This is probably my favourite city in Russia. Been there 6 times, I guess. I love walking around Nevsky, going to museums and churches. The Church of Spilt Blood is absolutely gorgeous. If you go in early summer, you should stay up one night and go see the bridges opening up to let the ships go. It's pretty cool.

About What recommendations are for visiting Moscow / St Petersburg

What recommendations are for visiting Moscow / St Petersburg?
I am thinking of traveling in Nov to Moscow and St Petersburg. I fear the cold and inability to read Russian letters. I will also be going alone. Any reasonable recommendations.

I advise you to learn how to read the Russian letters as soon as possible. Generally, you will almost find no latin descriptions or information in both cities. November and December are not the coldest month in Russia. the coldest time is January and February. In November the temperature might by about 0°C or above during the day and below zero at night. Moscow is one of the most expensive cities of the world. St. Petersburg is cheaper and - from my point of view - much nicer. Avoid to show people where do you have your money. Avoid dark places out of main roads an be afraid of hooligan kids.
Answer 2 :
Wow! I am jealous... I went over for a month a couple of years ago so hope I can give you some good advice. Knowing the Cyrillic alphabet will really help, worse case scenario get a print out from the net. Just by knowing the letters you can figure a few things out (like the words pizza, bar and hot dog ;-) It will be darn cold (It starts snowing already in October so by Nov should be a good ground covering) so wrap up warm. If you buy any furry things there make sure the furry stuff is on the inside as it insulates better. Another idea is to go to a language school for a week to get the basics down (ABA in Puschkin is good), and also you can meet a few people and get over the culture shock... In St Petes find a club called Fish Fabrique, its pretty good. Also eat some Borsch soup and generally have a good time (remember if your drinking vodka with russians dont down you drink, just sip it, and it wont get topped up. I know its a stereotype but they can drink!) Enjoy!

I went to Russia about 2 years ago. Had the time of my life there. I could not speak or read a word of Russian, what I picked up I heard off the street and from my trusty Lonely Planet phrase book. Going alone depends on your gender and age. It was not long ago a New Zealander woman in her 50s or 60s was killed in Moscow, and she was staying in the Izmailovo Market area, which is the same place as I stayed. Russia can be a dodgy place if you don't know what you're doing. Are you joining up with a tour group when you get there? Moscow is huge but they have an excellent Metro system (which is in itself a great tourist pull), the Red Square/Kremlin/St Basil's is of course a must. If you have time you can check out the Culture Park of fallen Soviet statues which isn't THAT spectacular. A walk down the Arbat wouldn't go astray either, and nor would a trip to the Cathedral fo Christ the Saviour which was blown up by Stalin but since restored. Saint Petersburg is a much more beautiful city than Moscow and most of its tsarist treasures have been retained. Of course the Hermitage is a must-see, and you should pick out a couple of the many palaces surrounding the city. The Peterhof and the Catherine Palace are my personal reccommendations. Also pay a visit to the Leningrad Siege Museum. Walking up the Nevsky Prospect is a joy in itself. The best time to go is June/July, during the White Nights. OK, hope that helps

What is needed to fly to europe from US and take either the train or bus to st petersburg, russia?
I am planning on flying to England or Germany from Las Vegas and then taking land transportation to St Petersburg Russia to save money. I know Russia requires a visa to stay there but are any other visas or transit visas required to travel through the european countries? Need real answers, damn it.

Answer 1 :
Money is not significant. Why everybody is making money!
Answer 2 :
Well, to fly from US to Europe, and then take a train or bus to St. Petersburg, Russia you need the following: plane(s) train(s) bus(es) I hope my answer has helped you in your travels. Bon voyage, putanna. -Jesus
Answer 3 :
Why on earth you would want to fly to England or Germany then take land transportation to St. Petersburg is beyond my comprehension. Berlin to St.Petersburg by shortest land route is 1600 kilometres London to St. Petersburg is 260 kilometres and a ferry crossing would be required. Cheapest method is a flight from Las Vegas to St.Petersburg with flight changes in London and one of the main airport hubs in Europe, preferably booking a through ticket.
Answer 4 :
Why do you assume that ground transportation will be cheaper than flying into St Petersburg? First, you don't want to fly into London because ground transportation from there pretty much means taking the Eurostar to Paris as a start and that's expensive. Germany is closer to St Petersburg and there are budget flights to St Petersburg on Germanwings, Air Berlin and /or Air Baltic from many cities in Germany. see: http://www.whichbudget.com/ or http://www.skyscanner.net/ which are two good sites for finding budget flights here in Europe. It's faster, cheaper and you don't have to worry about visas other than the one for Russia

About traveling to St.Petersburg Florida

traveling to St.Petersburg Florida?
We leave 4-27 to travel to st.petersburg Florida. I have never been there before. What is the weather normally like this time of year? And would it be warm enough to swim? Thanks!

Answer 1 :
Yes, it should be plenty warm to swim. I've visited the St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Tampa area several times and it's always been warm enough to swim this time of year. The weather is usually warm to a little hot, with some occasional thunderstorms. It's not as hot and humid as summer, so that's good. It's usually around 80 degrees F this time of year in the daytime. St. Petersburg has a beautiful Pier and beaches. Also, Caladesi Island, located just north of Clearwater Beach, is gorgeous. I took a ferry to get there, because no cars are allowed on the island. It has a very clean, lovely beach. I highly recommend going there since you'll be in the area.
Answer 2 :
Most of the tourist find it more than acceptable to swim in the weather this time of year. You'll find us locals still wearing our parkas though, lol. We're so spoiled
